Much Ado

As coaches, we constantly have to deal with new challenges if we want to succeed.

Sometimes the greatest motivation does not come from success itself — or even from winning.

We have to compete with the challenges around us and keep learning how to renew ourselves in order to maintain our players’ interest and commitment.

We could give up.

There were times when even the most obvious sources of motivation were enough on their own to restore lost energy and help players approach the next challenge with renewed enthusiasm.

They could return to the routine, the discipline and the work that ultimately provide the foundation for success.

But we cannot give up.

At the same time, we also have to look carefully at ourselves.

Coaches must renew themselves as well.

We need to keep finding new sources of motivation, new energy and new reasons to continue.

That is why our goals must constantly be reconsidered, redefined and expressed clearly.

Without clear goals, motivation fades.

With meaningful goals, both coaches and players can find a reason to move forward again.
