Game Day Advice

Before the Game

  • Decide in advance that whatever happens, you will respect the game.
  • Allow your fellow coaches to give useful advice to the players.
  • Fill the players with positive emotions and confidence.
  • Appreciate great plays, no matter which team makes them.
  • Acknowledge the referees when they make good decisions.
  • Enjoy the day.

After the Game

  • Thank the referees for handling a difficult game professionally.
  • Thank the coaches for their work.
  • Do not immediately evaluate your players unless they ask for feedback.

Instead, ask open-ended questions such as:

  • What was the best moment of the game?
  • What did you enjoy the most?
  • What did you learn from this game?

Encourage the players even if they did not perform well.

Try to remain composed when refereeing decisions go against your team.

Help calm down angry or frustrated parents.

Be Positive. Set a Good Example.

The way adults behave around the game has a strong influence on young players.

Coaches, parents and other adults should help create an environment in which children can compete, learn and enjoy basketball while respecting teammates, opponents, coaches and referees.
